Supporting Our Sisters

When we have a friend or family member who is in an abusive relationship, it’s hard to know what to do. How do we truly support someone when we don’t agree with their choices? How do we take care of ourselves when we are sad and worried about another person?

It’s important to understand that both fear and hope can keep women stuck in abusive relationships. It’s also important to understand that leaving an abusive relationship is a process – sometimes a long one. It’s rarely accomplished in one step. Each woman has to find her own way.

We can help our friend or family member by letting her know that we care, that help is available, and that we respect her choices. We also need to remember to look after ourselves, to take a break from the situation and do something that nurtures us.

Several times a year, Comox Valley Transition Society puts on a free, 3 hour workshop called Supporting Our Sisters, where you can get more information and support with this challenging situation. Call 897.0511 to register.
