Today marks 22 years since the Montreal Massacre.
It was
December 6th, 1989 that Marc Lepine went on a shooting spree at the school. In
just under 20 minutes he killed 14 women, injuring 10 more, including four men.
He then shot himself, claiming he was fighting feminism.
He had left
behind a suicide note that blamed feminists for ruining his life. The note
included a list of nineteen Quebec women whom he considered to be feminists and
apparently wished to kill.
The World Health
Organization lists violence against women as a major public
health problem and a violation of human rights. A recent global study found up
to 71 per cent of women have reported experiencing physical or sexual violence
at some point in their lives.
